         De stad Nyaungdone ligt op het splitsingspunt van de Ayeyarwady rivier en de Pan Hlaing rivier in Myanmar. De sterke erosie die hierdoor optreedt leidt tot belangrijke risico’s voor het bezwijken van de oevers en bedijking met als gevolg risico’s voor het overstromen van de stad bij hoogwater. Ook de pijlers van een in de nabijheid gelegen verkeersbrug over de Ayeyarwady rivier worden bedreigd door erosie als gevolg van een zich verplaatsende hoofdgeul. Zowel bij de stad als bij de brug zijn oeververdedigingen geplaatst. Het is echter niet duidelijk of deze oeververdedigingen voldoende zijn voor duurzame bescherming en – als dat niet zo is – welke aanvullende maatregelen dan nodig zijn.
